I’d like you to participate in a small thought experiment with me. Don’t worry. It won’t hurt.
Get quiet and imagine a world where all nutrition comes in a daily pellet. You wake up, take your pellet, and are done for the day. It is exactly what you need to fuel and nourish your body.
Gone are the grocery stores. Gone are the restaurants. No more movie snacks, meal planning, or celebration dinners.
I know it’s crazy to think about, but try.
You wouldn’t need to plan shopping lists, think about what restaurants are located where, or clean up a kitchen. As a matter of fact, kitchens would be gone too.
Think of all the free time you’d have.
Also gone would be the anticipation of your next meal. The little high you get when you entertain one meal over another. Also gone would be any anxiety you might experience – no more feelings of denial or punishment. ‘Cause it’d just be a pellet and you’d be done.
Do these thoughts create a sense of freedom in you, or do they make you sad, angry, depressed, or anxious? Just how attached are you to the role food plays in your life?
I understand we have a complex social web woven around food. I think it’s too interconnected for some of us. Sometimes I recommend a client stay out of restaurants for a couple of weeks or give up sweets. They actually get angry with me – exclaiming that’s not a life worth living.
Seriously? Isn’t food just a pile of molecules meant to give us energy and nutrients to keep our bodies going? I don’t think food ever wanted to be our friend, a substitute for love, entertainment, or our reason for being. In reality the food we eat only becomes one of three things: energy/nutrition, fat, or poo. That’s it.
So, imagine a world where food is a daily pellet. How that makes you feel speaks volumes.
