They Did It!
Sunday, 06 March 2011 09:26
There are some moments in life when a nexus of determination, mutual support, and plain belief materialize into an outstanding day.  March 5, 2011 was one of those days.

Eight weeks ago, a small team of regular people who hold day jobs, take care of their families, worry about their mortgages, and harbor some mild fears, came together.  They signed themselves up to move their bodies 13.1 miles.  Some had goals of beating their previous best time.  Others just wanted to cross the finish line on two feet.  They all pushed themselves to do what they hadn't done before.

And they all did it.

If this is sounding like no big deal, get in your car and measure out 13.1 miles.  It's a LONG way.  Try to jog part of it.  You'll see how hard it is.

Normally, they would have had 12 weeks to prepare but we only had 8 - and they signed up anyway.

You need to appreciate what this took.  They nursed themselves through leg pains, injured toe nails, blisters, and even the flu.  They carved out significant amounts of their week - walking/jogging for hours at a time.  They faced self-doubt and mild anxieties, wondering if they could manage 13.1 miles.

When one faltered, the others picked him up.  When one needed a mid-week partner, others met her to train.  They emailed each other, inquired as to the status of injuries, and cheered the smallest of successes.  Even if they couldn't run the race in the end due to injury, they still turned out to support their teammates.

They made a memory that day - together.

It has been our privilege and an honor to train them.
